Happy Birthday Isaac

Isaac is a New Year's baby -
so his birthday is always a celebration for everyone.

This year was no different.

We started the party on New Year's Eve with great friends at the bowling alley.

It's so cool to be retro these days!

The kids complained about my "mini" cupcakes -
but since they normally only eat the frosting off the top
I didn't have to pick up any "BOTTOMS" :)
I'm smarter than they think!

The birthday party pack comes with a bowling pin that everyone can sign.

After church on New Year's Day - we took three of Isaac's friends to lunch,

and then Mike took all the boys to play paintball.

Isaac's first dive

Isaac was dive certified a few months ago -
but every time he and Mike planned to go on a dive together,
the weather was nasty or something else came up.

Friday, 11-11-11 - Veteran's Day!
we made a trip down to GabGab and Isaac and Mike finally got to dive.

Isaac loves all things military.

So when the USS Ronald Reagan pulled into Kilo Wharf,
Mike made sure Isaac was on the VIP list to tour the carrier.

Isaac is the guest blogger to tell you about his tour.

Hi Isaac here, the carrier that I went on had lots of aircraft, We went into hangar bay#2 first, then walked into hangar bay# 1 2nd.... (does that sound right?). that picture to the right is of ronald reagan, they even have his office desk from the white house on the carrier, the real one!!!!!

that is the hawkeye aircraft with the name and number of the ship. the hawkeye is the aircraft that has a radar dome on the top and the one that takes reconsistance missions, it also extends the range of the carriers radar.

theres a picture of a python sneaking out the window.

and the picture below is of an F-18 fighter, this one is the one that preforms.....I think

this is the same kind of helicopter as the one in hangar bay two. but this one is on the flight deck. I think this one preformes search and rescue missions.

Isaac is a complex little guy with a lot of emotion.
I feel like, sometimes, he doesn't know what to do with it all.
So he has been encouraged to write / journal.

Dear Parents,

I wish chould have less homework and chorer because it takes time away from my day. I don't get to do the things I enjoy like playing and reading and resting and wondering.
The chores get in the way after homework. I've been mean latly because I don't get to play or do any of these things very much. I get to much homework and it makes me scream and yell and all of that stuff and makes me lose time. our rules are to strict and drive me crazy. I've always wanted to play Call of duty: world at war but you say, "NO" becuase "It's an "M" game." I've been angry latly and I want you to consider this greatly and carfuly with concern.

Epic breakfast

A long time ago

in a Galaxy far,

far away,

a Jedi master chef created an EPIC breakfast

to unleash the power of his Padawan.

Using the force,

he created three pancake molds

in honor of

their favorite galactic heroes and villains.

Okay, the real story is, that Mike's mom used to make pancakes into shapes when he and his brother and sister were kids. She got our boys some pancake molds when they were little and the tradition continued. Mike would get up with the boys on Saturday mornings and make Daddycakes. They were letters and all kinds of shapes.

Continuing with the tradition, our great friends the Medved's sent these to us for Christmas.

Thus, the Galactic Breakfast in honor of Isaac's birthday!

I realize that almost all of the post about Isaac are of things he says....

but really, he just cracks me up.

Yesterday, we were riding in the van on a "somewhat" long drive (that's a relative term in Guam)
and he asked me if I was glad I had all boys.

Of course, I said yes.......

and he said, "Do you think boys are easier than girls?"

Again, yes

"WHY?"

"I think girls are more dramatic"

He thought about that for a bit and then replied,
"Am I an exception to that?"

Love you Isaac...........even when you are too dramatic! :)

Isaac has turned into a kid I never imagined.

He was a crazy, busy toddler and never seemed to stay in one place for more than 20 seconds.

Now he is a total book worm and reads for hours.

He was so silly as a little guy, that I thought he would be my class clown.

Instead, he is the class brain.

He uses vocabulary words that I don't use, (and some I don't know the meaning of)

He could probably stump the average history teacher on WWII facts.

And I feel certain that he could win, "Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader"
except that he IS a 5th grader, and the show is for adults.

I joke with him that he is 10 going on 40.

He takes things very serious.

So when I saw him reading a book titled, "How to Fight a Girl"

I questioned him.

"Isaac, where did you get that book?"

He misunderstood my tone and quickly replied,

"Mom, it's not an instructional book, it's just fiction. My teacher gave it to me."

so earlier this week I go upstairs to wake the boys from school.

I step up on the trundle to be able to see Isaac on the top bunk.

"Good morning Isaac" I said as I rubbed his cheek softly.

He smiles a big smile without opening his eyes.

Gives a little stretch and then pops one chocolate eye open.....

the sweet smile stretches wider and he proclaims, "Mom, you got cuter"

His tenderness warms my heart.

I love you Isaac.

"Does God have a phone number?"

.... Isaac asked me this morning at breakfast.

There was no one else downstairs, and we hadn't been talking about anything.

He was eating and I was buzzing around the kitchen.

I walked to the table and gave my best "church" answer, "well, no, God doesn't have a phone number - but we can talk to Him anytime, He is always with us"

"But I want to hear his voice" Isaac replied

WOW.... his words touched my heart in a way that I did not expect.

The faith of a child.

How long has it been since I longed to hear God's voice to me?

Why do I get so busy with "life" that I don't make time to listen?

I answered Isaac with another "church" answer -

about how we can hear God's voice by reading our Bible and praying

but his words have stuck with me.

Maybe today I did hear God's voice -

through my sweet Isaac.

It's hard to explain, but it's the words he uses, and the tone, and the drama!

His name means laughter, and it is oh so perfect for him!

Saturday he comes down stairs for the morning in a rush.

Bounds right over to me and says,

MOM! Zion got ELECTRIFIED during the night!"

I said, "What do you mean he got electrified?"

He replies, "You should see his HAIR!!!!!!!"

So, really, sometimes Isaac is the most insightful child you can imagine.

I know that most people really do think they have the smartest kid on the planet, but since I didn't actually BIRTH Isaac, I do think I can say, he is really insightful for a kid.

I wish I could just remember all the funny things he says. Sometimes they are so grown up that you think, "Did someone tell him to say that??"

We are at the doctor's office and Zion is sick. The nurse is going to swab his throat for a strep test. I begin to tell Zion what is going to happen and that it will scratch his throat. The nurse disagrees with me and tells him it won't hurt,
(a side note, that is a BIG pet-peeve of mine, DON'T LIE TO MY KIDS!!)

So...She swabs his throat and Zion throws up on her.

Isaac "tsk'd" his tongue and says, "That's Karma!"

It CRACKED me up!

Today is a special day in our family.

It's Isaac's "Got-cha" Day.

9 years ago today, we packed up our Ford Explorer with an empty carseat and headed from College Station to Houston Texas. It was a Tuesday. Isaac had been born on Sat. (New Year's Day) and with all the Y2K stuff, I guess people were worried about stock piling food and having electricity. So this little one creeped into the world at 3:17am while we slept. Our adoption agency, New Life Children's Services, was closed over the weekend. So on Monday they called us, and let us know we were parents again.

We arrived at Ben Taub hospital and met our social worker there. I was able to go up first and see our tiny new little one.

He was 3 days old, 7lbs, 7oz and goodness gracious he was CUTE!

Although Isaac was our second son, it was our first go with a newborn. (Michael was four months old when we adopted him.) He really seemed so tiny. I had always wanted a son named Isaac, so there wasn't much discussion about his name. His birth parents had given him the name James. So we put them together, Isaac James Thornton.

He continues to bless our lives in so many ways. Life is NEVER dull with Isaac around. We never imagined such a ball of energy was encased in that tiny wonder 9 years ago! He is full of miracles. (I'll tell you that story another day). And we can't wait to see what God has planned for him next!
